StitchPlot pattern guide
How to calculate thread for a cross-stitch pattern
Thread estimates are planning tools, not exact guarantees. Fabric count, strand count, stitch technique, tails and rework all affect consumption, so a useful calculation makes its assumptions visible and includes a margin.
Count stitches by color
Start with the number of full crosses assigned to each DMC color. Keep backstitching, specialty stitches and blended colors separate because they follow different assumptions.
Apply fabric and strand settings
The physical length of each stitch depends on fabric count, and total floss use scales with the number of strands. Use the same settings that define the printed chart.
Add working allowance
Include extra length for starts, stops, travel, knots or preferred finishing technique. A configurable margin is more honest than presenting a single exact number.
Round for purchasing
Convert the estimated length into skeins using the skein length available in your market, then round up. Consider one additional skein for colors with large totals or uncertain dye-lot availability.
